What Thirty Years in One Factory Teaches You About Fitting Out an Office

Most furniture companies sell what's in the catalogue. We've always worked the other way round: you tell us what the space needs to do, and we take it from there. That's been the case since 1991, and it's only possible because of something most of our clients don't think about until they need it, which is that around 80 per cent of what we supply is made in our own factory in Hartlepool.

It sounds like a manufacturing detail. In practice, it's the reason an office fit-out actually goes to plan. When EDF Energy needed their survey laboratories at Hartlepool Power Station completely refurbished, alongside a series of separate office projects over the years, they weren't buying furniture off a shelf, they were buying a team that could design around a working power station, build to the exact spec that environment demanded, and fit it without the whole thing grinding to a halt. That's not something you can promise convincingly if you're reselling someone else's stock.

Whichever the room actually needs

Offices rarely arrive as a blank canvas. There's an awkward reception area, a boardroom that needs to double as a breakout space, a budget that doesn't quite stretch as far as the wish list.
